Getting to Bali from Europe takes the best part of a day, but the flight is not what makes or breaks the holiday. The choices before you go are: which areas you stay in, how long you spend in each, and how you get around an island where 30 kilometres can take two hours. Here is the overview we wish we had before we moved there, and an easy way forward when you want the trip put together for you.

Travel style

Choose the trip that suits you

Bali is not one destination, it is many. Start with who you are and what you want from the trip, and we will match the areas, hotels and pace to you.

First time in Bali

The best of Bali, without the rush

Culture and rice terraces in Ubud, beaches and sunsets in the south and a day trip to Nusa Penida. Enough variety to see why people keep coming back, without changing hotels every night.

Families

Short transfers, calm beaches

Child-friendly hotels in Sanur and Ubud, Bali Zoo, calm water and short drives. We plan around sleep, meals and swimming, not around ticking off sights.

Honeymoon

Romance, planned to the last detail

A private jungle villa near Ubud, sunrise on Mt. Batur and a cliffside hotel in Uluwatu. We take care of the little surprises along the way, so you can simply be there.

Areas and destinations

Where in Bali should you go?

Most people get the most out of two or three areas in ten days: one for culture and nature, one by the beach and ideally one nearby island. These are the places we send most of our guests.

Ubud Bali’s cultural heart

Rice terraces, temples, jungle and yoga. Stay at least three nights, and visit the famous spots before eight, before the tour buses arrive.

Read the Ubud guide
Uluwatu Cliffs, beaches and sunsets

White beaches below towering cliffs, kecak dance at the temple and the island’s most beautiful sunsets. Our first choice for couples and honeymooners.

Read the Uluwatu guide
Seminyak and Canggu Cafés, beach clubs and surf

The social side of Bali with brunch, surf lessons, shopping and nightlife. Seminyak is the most complete, Canggu the most modern.

Read the Canggu guideSeminyak guide
Nusa Penida Bali’s wildest island

45 minutes by fast boat from Bali. Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach and snorkelling with manta rays. Doable in a day, but best with an overnight stay.

Read the Nusa Penida guide
Gili Islands Turquoise water, no cars

Bicycles instead of scooters, some of Indonesia’s best snorkelling and sea turtles just off the beach. A perfect way to end the trip.

Read the Gili guide
Lovina and North Bali Bali without the crowds

Dolphins at sunrise, Aling-Aling waterfall and the temple on Lake Bratan. Quiet, green and far from the traffic in the south.

Read the Lovina guide
Vegard’s tip Combine culture and beach, but move less often than you think. A classic route is three to four nights in Ubud, four in Uluwatu or Seminyak and one nearby island to finish. See the full overview in where to stay in Bali and our map of Bali.

More practical help: everything first-time visitors need to know and 10 things we wish we had known.

There are direct flights to Bali from Australia, New Zealand, most of Asia and the Middle East, in about 3–9 hours. From Europe, the UK and North America there’s one stop, and the trip takes about 16–27 hours. We can add flights to your trip.

Flights to Bali from around the world

Ten days for two typically costs around $2,500–3,500 on a budget, $4,000–7,000 mid-range and from $8,000 for luxury, flights included. Food and transport are inexpensive; flights are the biggest single cost. Our package trips start at $1,799 per person.

How much does it cost to travel to Bali? · Prices for activities and day trips

The dry season from April to October brings the most stable weather. April–June and September offer the best balance of weather, price and crowds, while July and August are peak season. November–March is the rainy season, with heavy but often short showers, greener landscapes and lower prices.

Best time to visit Bali, month by month

Citizens of most European countries, the UK, the US and Australia get a visa on arrival (VOA or e-VOA) for IDR 500,000, roughly $30, valid for 30 days and extendable once. Bali also charges a tourist levy of IDR 150,000, about $10. Apply for the e-VOA online before you leave to save time at the airport. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Bali visa, step by step

Bali has almost no public transport. A private driver is the easiest and safest option for excursions; with us, a car and driver costs $99 for up to eight hours, however many of you there are. Grab and Gojek work well in the south, and fast boats run to Nusa Penida and the Gilis. Riding a scooter requires a valid motorcycle licence.

Getting around Bali · Is a private driver worth it?

Ten to fourteen days is ideal for a first visit, with two or three areas and perhaps one nearby island. With fewer than eight days, stick to two places. Long travel days quickly eat into a short holiday.

How many days in Bali? · 10 days in Bali · 14 days in Bali

Yes, Bali is one of the safest destinations in Southeast Asia. The most common problems are traffic, strong sun, strong currents and upset stomachs, not crime. Make sure your travel insurance covers the activities you plan to do.
