Visa for Bali: Step-by-Step Guide

Most travellers need a visa for Bali, but the process is simple if you do it correctly. Here's everything about EVOA, Visa on Arrival, tourist tax, and the new digital arrival card, with a complete checklist you can fill out at home.
Most visitors need a visa to travel to Bali. The good news is that it’s simple, and you can sort it all out at home. Here’s everything you need to do before you fly: the visa, the tourist levy and the digital arrival card, with prices, links and what happens at the airport.
The short version: apply for the e-VOA (IDR 500,000, about $30), pay the tourist levy (IDR 150,000, about $9) and fill in the All Indonesia arrival card (free) within three days before you land. Your passport must be valid for at least six months.

Two ways to get your visa
Citizens of more than 90 countries, including the US, the UK, the EU, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and most of the Middle East and Asia, can choose between two options. Some Southeast Asian nationalities, such as Singapore and Malaysia, can enter visa-free. Check the official site if you’re unsure what applies to your passport.
1. e-VOA (electronic Visa on Arrival). You apply and pay at home at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. It costs the same as on arrival, but you can use the automatic passport gates (autogates) and skip the visa queue.
2. Visa on Arrival (VOA). You buy the visa in the arrivals hall at the airport. You pay at the counter, get a stamp in your passport and join the immigration queue. It works fine, but can take a long time in high season.
Our recommendation: always apply for the e-VOA in advance. It takes five minutes at home and can save you an hour in the queue.
Price and validity
| Type | Price | Validity | Extendable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| VOA / e-VOA (B1) | IDR 500,000 (about $30) | 30 days | Yes, once by 30 days |
| Tourist visa (C1) | Varies | 60 days | Yes |
For most visitors, the 30-day VOA or e-VOA is plenty. The price in your own currency varies slightly with the exchange rate.
How to apply for the e-VOA
- Go to evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
- Choose “Visa on Arrival” and enter your passport details, personal details and travel details, including your first accommodation.
- Upload a passport photo and the photo page of your passport.
- Pay with Visa, Mastercard or JCB.
- You’ll receive a confirmation and the visa as a PDF by email. Keep it.
- On arrival, scan your passport at an autogate and walk straight through.
Apply at least two days before you fly, ideally a week before. That gives you time if anything needs correcting.
Important: your passport must be valid for at least six months after you arrive in Indonesia. Immigration is strict about this, and you can be refused entry.
The tourist levy
Since February 2024 all foreign tourists pay a levy of IDR 150,000 (about $9) per person. It isn’t part of the visa. The money goes towards protecting Bali’s culture and nature.
Pay in advance at lovebali.baliprov.go.id and keep the QR code on your phone. It may be checked at the airport and at some attractions. You only pay once per visit.

The All Indonesia arrival card
Since 1 October 2025 everyone entering Indonesia must complete the digital All Indonesia arrival card. It brings immigration, customs and health together in one form, and replaces the old electronic customs declaration (e-CD), among others.
Fill it in for free at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the All Indonesia app, no earlier than three days before you land. Every traveller needs their own card, children included. You’ll get a QR code that’s scanned on arrival.
Only use the official sites ending in .go.id. There are fake sites that charge for forms that are free.
Checklist: do this at home

With all of this on your phone, arrival is quick.
What happens at the airport
Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar is Bali’s only international airport. Here’s how arrival works, step by step:
1. Immigration. This is where the e-VOA and the VOA differ. With an e-VOA you go to the autogates, scan your passport and are through in a minute or two. Without one, you first go to the VOA counter, pay IDR 500,000 and then join the immigration queue. In high season it can take an hour or more.
2. Baggage. If you used the autogates, you’ll often get there before your bags do.
3. Customs. Show the QR code from All Indonesia. If you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.
4. Tourist levy. You may be asked to show the QR code for the tourist levy. If you haven’t paid, there are payment counters.
5. Arrivals hall. Drivers, Grab and Gojek and money changers are waiting here. If you’ve booked a pickup, your driver will hold a sign with your name.
Taxis, Grab, drive times to your hotel and departure tips are in our Bali airport guide.

Frequently asked questions about the Bali visa
Can I extend my visa in Bali?
Yes. The VOA and e-VOA can be extended once by 30 days. With an e-VOA you can apply for the extension online. Otherwise you do it at an immigration office in Bali. Apply well before your first 30 days are up.
Is the visa only valid for Bali?
No, it covers all of Indonesia. You can travel to Lombok, Komodo, Java and other islands on the same visa.
Do children need their own visa?
Yes. Everyone needs their own visa and their own arrival card, babies included. Children pay the same price as adults.
What if I forget to apply for the e-VOA?
That’s fine. You buy the VOA in the arrivals hall for the same price. You’ll just have a longer queue.
How do I pay for the VOA at the airport?
With Visa, Mastercard or JCB, or in cash in rupiah or certain foreign currencies such as USD and EUR. Have a card ready.
Does my passport need six months’ validity?
Yes, and it’s an absolute requirement. Check the expiry date before you book your trip.

Do you need a visa where you change planes?
Many travellers fly to Bali via Doha, Dubai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Tokyo or Seoul. If you stay airside while you wait for your next flight, you usually don’t need a visa or an arrival card. If you want to leave the airport and see the city, rules depend on your nationality. Thailand and Singapore both require a free digital arrival card filled in within three days before arrival, and Thailand has announced changes to how long visa-free stays last. Check with your airline and the authorities of the country you’re transiting before you travel.
Visa for Bali with children
If you’re travelling with children, there are a few extra things to have in order:
Everyone needs their own visa and arrival card. There’s no family visa.
Children need their own passport with at least six months’ validity.
If you’re travelling alone with your children, it’s wise to bring a signed letter of consent from the other parent. You’re rarely asked for it, but it can happen.

Other entry requirements
Return ticket: you need a confirmed return ticket or an onward ticket out of Indonesia. You may be asked for it.
Accommodation: have the address of your first accommodation ready. It goes in the e-VOA application and the arrival card.
Payment card: bring a Visa or Mastercard for the visa and the tourist levy.
Money: withdraw rupiah from an ATM of a well-known bank when you arrive, ideally inside a bank or a shopping centre. Exchanging into rupiah at home is rarely worth it. More in currency, prices and tipping in Bali.
Want to stay longer than 60 days?
The VOA and e-VOA can be extended to a total of 60 days. To stay longer, you need a different visa, such as the C1 tourist visa, which you apply for before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. The Indonesian embassy in your country can answer questions.
