Map of Bali — the main places and what distinguishes them
Share
Bali is not one place — it's many destinations on one island. Many first-time Bali travelers are surprised by how varied the island actually is. Ubud and Uluwatu are both on Bali, but feel like two completely different worlds. This guide will give you an overview of the most important areas, what characterizes them, and who they are best suited for.
🗺️ Bali — one island, many worlds
Bali is approximately the size of Luxembourg — small enough to drive across in a few hours, but large enough that each area has its own unique character. From the dramatic cliffs in the south to the tranquil rice fields in the north, there are enormous differences within just a few miles.
The most important thing you can do when planning your Bali trip is to choose the right areas based on what you actually want to experience — not just book the first hotel you find. Let's take you through the most important places.

South Bali is where most travelers land and where most of the tourist activity is. The area includes Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, and Jimbaran — each with its own personality.
Kuta and Legian
Bali's most famous tourist area — and the busiest. Long beaches, shopping, bars, and lively nightlife. Best suited for those who want a lot of people around them and easy access to most things. Not the most authentic Bali, but practical and easily accessible from the airport.
Seminyak
The sophisticated alternative to Kuta. Here you'll find designer boutiques, fine restaurants, and elegant beach clubs. Quieter than Kuta but still social and lively. Suitable for couples, groups of friends, and those who want comfort and style without too much chaos.
Canggu
The hip, modern Bali. Cafes, co-working spaces, surfing, and an international atmosphere. Batu Bolong and Echo Beach are popular surf spots. Canggu has grown enormously in recent years and is now home to many digital nomads and younger travelers. Surf lessons are available for all levels.
Jimbaran
Known for its calm bay and beachfront seafood restaurants. Perfect for a romantic dinner with a sunset. More family-friendly and quieter than Seminyak and Canggu.
🌿 Ubud — the heart of culture

Ubud is located in the central highlands and is Bali's cultural and spiritual heart. Surrounded by rice fields, jungle, and temples, this is the place for those who want to experience the real Bali — away from the beaches and into the culture.
What characterizes Ubud:
- Tegallalang rice fields — among the most photographed in the world
- Monkey Forest — sacred forest reserve with hundreds of monkeys
- Vibrant art scene — painters, sculptors, and artisans
- Yoga, wellness, and retreat culture
- Campuhan Ridge Walk — beautiful morning walk along the ridge
- Bicycle tour through the rice fields — one of Bali's best experiences
- Cooking class with local chefs
Ubud is perfect for culture enthusiasts, couples, solo travelers, and those who want to combine activity with relaxation. The temperature is a bit cooler than on the coast — pleasant and green all year round.

Cycle through rice fields, villages, and along the river in the Ubud valley with a local guide. One of Bali's most popular experiences for Norwegian travelers.

The Bukit Peninsula stretches south from Bali and is known for spectacular cliffs, beautiful beaches, and some of the island's best surf spots. Uluwatu is the crown jewel — with its iconic cliff-edge temple complex and world-class surfing.
What characterizes Uluwatu and Bukit:
- Uluwatu Temple — one of Bali's holiest sites, dramatically situated on a 70-meter cliff
- Kecak dance at sunset — an unforgettable cultural experience
- Padang Padang, Bingin, and Dreamland — some of Bali's most beautiful beaches
- World-class surfing for experienced surfers
- Exclusive boutique hotels and luxury villas
- Quieter and more exclusive than Canggu and Seminyak
Uluwatu is best suited for couples, honeymooners, and those who want luxury and tranquility. See our luxury package for inspiration.
🏝️ Nusa Islands — island paradise

Three islands lie just off Bali's southeastern coast — Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan. All three are completely different from mainland Bali and offer a completely different experience.
Nusa Penida
The largest and wildest of the three. Kelingking Beach (T-rex island), Angel's Billabong, and Broken Beach are among Bali's most photogenic spots. The day trip to Nusa Penida is our most popular tour — take a fast boat from Sanur and experience everything in one day. Manta rays, dramatic cliffs, and pristine nature await.
Nusa Lembongan
Calmer and more accessible than Nusa Penida. Perfect for snorkeling, cycling, and relaxation. A popular destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the mainland.
🏝️ Gili Islands — car-free island paradise

The Gili Islands are technically located off Lombok — not Bali — but are still a natural part of many Bali trips as they can be reached by fast boat in 1.5–2 hours from Sanur or Padangbai. Three islands, three personalities — and all without cars or scooters. See our multi-day tour to Lombok and Gili for inspiration.
Gili Trawangan
The largest and most lively of the three. Known for good nightlife, snorkeling, and a relaxed atmosphere. No cars or scooters — only bicycles and cidomo (horse-drawn carriage). Most popular among younger travelers and those who want a social life alongside the beach and sea.
Gili Meno
The calmest and most romantic island. Perfect for couples and honeymooners. Known for the famous underwater statues — a circle of human figures covered in coral on the seabed. Fantastic snorkeling and diving right from the beach.
Gili Air
The best middle ground — more lively than Meno but quieter than Trawangan. Suitable for those who want a bit of both worlds. Good selection of restaurants and a pleasant beach promenade.
🌋 Kintamani and Mount Batur — volcanoes and lakes

In the central highlands, you'll find Bali's most dramatic landscape. Mount Batur is an active volcano at 1,717 meters — and the hike to the summit for sunrise is one of Bali's most memorable experiences. Start at 02:00, reach the summit at sunrise, and look out over the crater lake and the clouds below you.
The Kintamani plateau is also known for its coffee plantations and the famous Luwak coffee. The view of the Batur crater from the restaurants along the road is outstanding.
🐬 Lovina and North Bali — a local secret

North Bali is the part of the island most tourists never discover — and that's precisely why it's so special. Lovina is known for its black sand beach and sunrise dolphin safaris. The multi-day tour to Lovina is a favorite among those who want to experience a different Bali.
Along the way to Lovina, you'll pass the Aling-Aling waterfalls — three fantastic waterfalls with natural pools where you can jump from cliffs, and the Ulun Danu Bratan Temple on Lake Bratan — one of Bali's most beautiful and photographed temples.
🦎 East Bali — authentic and undiscovered
East Bali is for the adventurous traveler who wants to get off the tourist trails. The Sidemen Valley is fantastically beautiful with rice fields and views of Mount Agung volcano. Amed is a quiet fishing village area perfect for snorkeling and diving. Karangasem and Tirta Gangga offer beautiful water palaces and temples.
🗓️ Recommended itinerary based on map
Based on geography, we recommend this order for a 10–14 day trip:
| Days | Area | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1–3 | Seminyak / Canggu | Near the airport, get into Bali mode |
| Day 4–6 | Ubud | Culture, nature, and the real Bali |
| Day 7 | Nusa Penida day trip | Bali's wildest nature in one day |
| Day 8–10 | Uluwatu | Cliffs, luxury, and sunset |
| Day 11–14 | Lovina / Gili Islands | Dolphins or island paradise to finish |
This itinerary minimizes unnecessary transportation and provides a natural progression from urban to authentic to relaxed.
