A good Bali itinerary is less about how many places you can fit in, and more about the order. The right route means short drives, fewer hotel changes and time to enjoy where you are. We lived in Bali for four years and have driven all these roads many times.

Supplements are per person: a fast boat both ways to the islands, and long days for the driver to Amed and Lovina.
Short drives, an easy pace
The planner follows the same rules we use when we put a trip together for you.
Landing late? Spend the first nights near the airport in Seminyak, Sanur or Nusa Dua. Landing early, you can drive straight to Ubud.
The route goes in one direction, so you never drive back and forth. North and east first, the islands and the beach last.
The last stop is in Uluwatu, Kuta or on an island with a short boat ride, so the day you fly home is easy.
One night is just a travel day and a check-in. Two or more give you time to enjoy the place.
We do the volcano at sunrise from Ubud, as in our packages. It saves a hotel change.
Your driver takes you between every stop and waits when you stop along the way.

Start near the airport or in Ubud, depending on when you land, continue north and east if you have time, and finish on the beach in the south or on an island. That way the route goes in one direction and the drives stay short.
With a week we recommend two places, with ten days three or four, and with two weeks five. Each place should have at least two nights, so you don’t spend your holiday in a car.
Ubud to Uluwatu takes about 2–3 hours depending on traffic, Ubud to Lovina or Amed about 2.5–3 hours. The boat from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan takes about 30–45 minutes, and to the Gili Islands about 2–3 hours.
Places on the mainland are included, even with several stops. The islands cost $70 per person for a fast boat both ways, and Lovina and Amed $65 for long days for the driver.
We do the Mt. Batur sunrise as a day trip from Ubud. You are picked up early in the night and back in Ubud by lunch.
