Bali Package Holidays: Find the Right Trip

Dreaming of Bali, but don’t want to plan every single step yourself? A package holiday is the answer for most people. But Bali packages vary enormously: some are a flight and a hotel, others include a driver, excursions and a person you can call when something happens. Here’s what to check before you book, whoever you book with.

What is a Bali package holiday?

A package holiday is a trip where at least two parts, such as a hotel and transport or a hotel and excursions, are put together and sold at one price. The Package Travel Act then applies, and the organiser is responsible for making sure everything is delivered. That’s the big difference from booking the hotel, driver and excursions separately.

In Bali, that means you don’t have to work out the right area, negotiate with drivers, find the harbour for Nusa Penida or wonder whether the guide will turn up at 2 am before Mt. Batur.

8 things to check before you book

1. Is the trip covered by a travel guarantee? A package from a licensed tour operator with a travel guarantee should be protected, so you get your money back or get home if the organiser can’t deliver. Ask about it. If you book a hotel or excursions directly, or through an agency without a guarantee, you often don’t have this protection.

2. What’s actually included? “Package” can mean anything from flights and a hotel to a complete trip. Ask for a list of what’s included: airport pick-up, transport between areas, fast boats, excursions, entrance tickets and breakfast. Anything not on the list, you pay for yourself on the spot.

3. Which areas will you stay in? Bali is big, and 30 kilometres can take two hours. A good trip has two or three areas that fit together, for example Ubud, Uluwatu and a neighbouring island. If every night is in the same beach hotel in Kuta, it’s a beach holiday, not a Bali trip. Read more in where to stay in Bali.

4. How will you get around? Bali has almost no public transport. Check that there’s a private driver between areas and on excursions, not a shared minibus that picks up from twelve other hotels first. See is a private driver worth it.

5. Is the pace realistic? Ten days with a hotel change every other day looks impressive on paper, but means a lot of time in the car. Look for at least three nights per area and a quiet first day after the long flight.

6. Can the trip be tailored? The best packages are a starting point, not a locked bundle. Ask whether you can add days, change hotels, add an extra island or drop an excursion you’re not interested in.

7. Who do you contact if something happens? A call centre with a queue is very different from one person who knows your trip. Ask whether you get a fixed contact person, and whether they’re available while you’re in Bali.

8. What does the price per person include? Always compare like with like: with or without flights, how many nights, which hotel standard, and how much transport and how many excursions are included. A cheap price without transport and excursions quickly becomes more expensive than a trip where everything is included. For experienced travellers who enjoy planning, booking it all yourself can work well. For most people visiting Bali for the first time, with children or on honeymoon, a package gives you more time for the holiday itself. Read the full comparison in package or tailor-made trip.

Which type of package suits you?

First time in Bali: choose a trip with two or three classic areas, such as Ubud, Uluwatu and Seminyak, and a few excursions. Don’t try to see everything.

Couples and friends: add a neighbouring island. Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan or the Gili Islands show you a completely different side of Bali.

Families with children: choose short drives, family-friendly hotels with a pool and a calm pace. Sanur and Ubud are good bases. See Bali with kids.

Two weeks or more: a round trip that also takes in Lovina, Amed, Gili or Komodo.

A tight budget: simpler hotels, but keep the private transport and the key excursions. That’s where you save the most time and stress.

When should you book?

For July, August and Christmas, book 4–6 months ahead, as the best villas and flight prices go first. The rest of the year, 2–3 months is usually enough. See the best time to travel to Bali and the Bali trip planning checklist.

💡 Vegard’s tips

Always ask which hotels are included, not just which standard. A 4★ hotel in the middle of the traffic in Kuta and a 4★ hotel among the rice fields of Ubud are two completely different holidays. If you can’t get the name of the hotel before you pay, I’d ask why.
