The Biggest Mistakes Travellers Make in Bali

The Biggest Mistakes Travellers Make in Bali

Many travellers make the same mistakes in Bali – and lose both time and experiences. Here are the most common pitfalls, and how you can easily avoid them.

Bali is a fantastic destination – but many travellers come home feeling they could have got much more out of the trip. Not because Bali disappoints, but because small and completely unnecessary mistakes spoil the experience. Here are the most common mistakes people make in Bali, and how you can easily avoid them – so your holiday is safer, smarter and far more memorable.

1. Underestimating distances and traffic

On the map Bali looks small – in practice 10 km can take over an hour. Many people plan days that are too packed and end up stressed instead of relaxed. The solution is simple: plan fewer stops per day, use a private driver for longer trips and combine experiences that are close together. Our day trips are planned around realistic travel times.

2. Booking activities at random on the street

There are countless stalls selling rafting, snorkelling and ATV trips – but quality, safety and insurance vary enormously. Choose certified providers, check what’s actually included and avoid “too good to be true” prices. At ReadySetIsland we only work with safe, local partners we’ve tested ourselves.

3. Staying in the wrong area for your travel style

Canggu isn’t for everyone. Ubud doesn’t suit everyone. Yet many people choose where to stay based on Instagram – not on what they need. Decide what kind of holiday you want (active, relaxed, family, surf), choose your area accordingly, and consider combining several places. Read our guide: where to stay in Bali.

4. Trying to do too much in too little time

“We’re going to see everything!” is a classic – and a sure route to holiday stress. Prioritise quality over quantity, choose multi-day trips over lots of separate excursions, and build in rest days. The best Bali memories are rarely made between two activities on a tight schedule.

Multi-day trips combine the best experiences without unnecessary stress – we arrange everything.

5. Ignoring cultural rules and customs

Bali is relaxed – but deeply religious. The wrong dress code in temples or disrespectful behaviour causes needless friction. Wear a sarong in temples, respect ceremonies and local customs, and show humility. It leads to better encounters with the local people – and a richer travel experience.

6. Thinking everything has to be arranged on WhatsApp

A lot happens via messages in Bali – but that also means poor overview, no receipt and zero guarantee. Use platforms where you can click and pay, get written confirmations, and stick to one safe platform for your experiences. With ReadySetIsland you book safely – before your trip starts.

7. Having no plan for transport

A scooter looks tempting – but accidents happen every day. Many people ride without insurance or experience. Use a private driver for longer trips, only rent a scooter if you’re experienced – and put safety first.

8. Booking too late

Popular activities, drivers and hotels book up fast – especially in high season (July–August and around Christmas and New Year). Plan ahead, book key experiences early, and use local experts who already have the network in place.

Small choices, big difference

Bali can be one of the best trips of your life – if you avoid the most common pitfalls. At ReadySetIsland we help you make the right choices, with trusted suppliers and a plan that gives you more experiences and less stress.
