All international flights to Bali land at one airport: Ngurah Rai International (DPS) in Denpasar, in the south of the island. How you get there depends on where you’re flying from. From Australia and most of Asia there are plenty of direct flights of 3–8 hours. From the Middle East you can fly nonstop in about 9 hours. From Europe, the UK and North America you’ll always have one stop on the way. Here’s an overview by region, with flight times, the best routes and when to book.

The short version: Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia, East Asia, India and the Gulf all have direct flights to Bali. From Europe and the UK, expect 16–20 hours with one stop. From the US and Canada, expect 18–27 hours with one stop in Asia or the Middle East. Book 3–6 months ahead, and 6–9 months ahead for July, August and Christmas.

Flights to Bali from Australia

Australia is Bali’s biggest market, and you can fly direct from 12 cities. Perth is closest, at about 3 hours 45 minutes, and Darwin takes under 3 hours. From Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane it’s about 5.5–6 hours. There are also direct flights from Adelaide, Cairns, the Gold Coast, Canberra, Newcastle, the Sunshine Coast and Avalon.

Jetstar has the most routes. Virgin Australia, Qantas, Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air and AirAsia also fly the main routes. Fares rise sharply in the Australian school holidays, so book early if you’re travelling then.

Flights to Bali from New Zealand

Air New Zealand flies direct from Auckland to Bali, about 8 times a week, in roughly 9 hours. From Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, connect in Auckland or fly via Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.

Flights to Bali from Asia

Bali is a short hop from most of Asia, and many travellers add it to a longer trip around the region.

• Singapore: about 2 hours 45 minutes, with many daily flights from Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Jetstar, Garuda and KLM.
• Kuala Lumpur: about 3 hours with AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and Batik Air.
• Bangkok: about 4–4.5 hours with Thai Airways, Thai AirAsia or Thai Lion Air. Phuket also has direct flights.
• Vietnam and the Philippines: direct from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Manila.
• Hong Kong and Taiwan: about 5 hours with Cathay Pacific, EVA Air, China Airlines or Starlux.
• China: direct from Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Xiamen.
• South Korea and Japan: about 7 hours from Seoul and Busan, and about 7 hours 15 minutes from Tokyo.
• India: direct from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Chennai, in 6–8 hours.

Flights to Bali from the Middle East

You can fly nonstop to Bali from Dubai with Emirates, Abu Dhabi with Etihad and Doha with Qatar Airways, in about 9–9.5 hours. From Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, connect in one of these hubs or in Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. That makes the total trip about 11–14 hours.

Flights to Bali from the UK and Europe

There are no nonstop flights from Europe to Bali, so you’ll always have one stop. From London, the fastest options take about 16–18 hours: Emirates via Dubai, Singapore Airlines via Singapore, Etihad via Abu Dhabi, and Qatar Airways via Doha. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Thai Airways via Bangkok are popular too.

From Amsterdam, KLM flies to Bali via Singapore on one ticket. From Paris, Frankfurt, Zurich, Milan, Madrid and most other big European airports, the Gulf carriers and Turkish Airlines connect you in one stop.

Flights to Bali from Scandinavia

From Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Helsinki, there’s one stop, and the trip takes about 18–22 hours. Thai Airways via Bangkok is a favourite of ours. A night or two in Bangkok is an easy way to break up the trip. KLM via Amsterdam and Singapore, and the Gulf carriers via Dubai or Doha, also work well.

Flights to Bali from the USA and Canada

There are no direct flights from North America to Bali. Flying from the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Vancouver), you’ll usually connect in an East Asian hub such as Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong or Manila. Expect about 18–23 hours in total.

From the East Coast and Midwest (New York, Washington, Chicago, Toronto), connect in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Singapore or an East Asian hub. Expect about 20–27 hours. Many travellers break the trip with a stopover in Tokyo, Singapore or Dubai on the way.

When to book flights to Bali

• Book 3–6 months ahead for most of the year, and 6–9 months ahead for July, August and Christmas.
• The cheapest time to fly is usually the rainy season, from November to March, outside the Christmas holidays. April to October is drier but more expensive. See the best time to visit Bali.
• Set a price alert on Google Flights or Skyscanner, and book when the fare drops.
• Keep the whole trip on one ticket. If your first flight is delayed, the airline must rebook your connection.

Most nationalities need a visa on arrival. Apply for the e-VOA online before you fly, pay the Bali tourist levy and fill in the digital arrival card. Then you can use the fast lanes at immigration. From the airport, it’s about 30–45 minutes to Seminyak, 45–60 minutes to Canggu or Uluwatu and 1–1.5 hours to Ubud. Arrange your pickup before you land, so there’s nothing to sort out when you arrive.
