Uluwatu — luxury, cliffs, and serene sunsets
Uluwatu is located in the south of the Bukit Peninsula and is known for dramatic cliffs, luxurious resorts, and some of Bali’s most beautiful beaches. The area is perfect for couples, honeymoons, and luxury vacations, as well as for travelers seeking a quieter environment.
Uluwatu feels calmer, more exclusive, and more relaxed than many other areas in Bali. Here, it’s all about clifftop beach clubs, sunset dinners, boutique hotels, spas, and long days at the beach. The pace is slower than in Canggu, and many choose Uluwatu to completely unwind.
The advantages are clear: beautiful white beaches with turquoise water, little traffic, fantastic clifftop sunsets, and many luxurious villas and resorts. The downside is that the area is spread out — you’ll need a scooter or driver to get around, and there are fewer cafes, co-working spaces, and nightlife options than in Canggu.

Canggu — cafes, social life, and modern Bali
Canggu is one of the most popular areas in Bali, especially among digital nomads, groups of friends, first-time travelers, and younger travelers. Here you’ll find trendy cafes, beach clubs, co-working spaces, shopping, fitness, and a vibrant restaurant scene.
Canggu has a more social and energetic vibe — modern, international, and lively, with people from all over the world. There’s always something happening here: brunch spots, beach clubs, surf schools, events, yoga and retreats, padel, and co-working.
The advantages include many restaurants, cafes, and beach clubs, a good social atmosphere and nightlife, and surf lessons available for beginners. The disadvantages are heavy traffic, more tourists, and darker beaches not suitable for swimming.
Beaches — which are the finest?
If beautiful beaches are at the top of your list, Uluwatu clearly wins. Melasti Beach, Padang Padang, Bingin Beach, Dreamland, and Nyang Nyang are known for turquoise water, white sand, and dramatic cliffs — some of Bali’s most picturesque beaches are located here.
In Canggu, Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, and Berawa Beach are more known for surfing, beach clubs, and sunsets than for swimming-friendly turquoise waters. The beaches are dark and wavy — perfect for surfers, but not for those who want to relax in calm waters.

Who is each area best suited for?
Uluwatu is best suited for couples and honeymoons, luxury vacations and relaxation, romantic trips, and surfers who want world-class waves. In short: those who desire a tranquil environment and the most beautiful beaches and sunsets Bali has to offer.
Canggu is best suited for first-time travelers and groups of friends, solo travelers and digital nomads, those who want social life, fitness, and cafes, beginner surfers, and travelers who want plenty of activities around them.
Can you combine Uluwatu and Canggu?
Yes — and that's actually what many people choose to do. A popular combination is 4–5 days in Canggu followed by 4–5 days in Uluwatu. This gives you both social life, beach clubs, surfing, and quieter luxury with beautiful beaches. This works especially well for 10–14 day trips — and many also add island hopping to Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan as a grand finale.
