Bali vs Thailand 2026
Which is best for you?

Bali eller Thailand – sammenligning av to populære reisemål for norske reisende 2026
← Travel guide Bali

Bali and Thailand are two of the most popular travel destinations in Southeast Asia for Norwegians. Both offer beaches, warm temperatures, exciting culture, and affordable prices compared to Europe. But which destination is truly best for you?

In this guide, we compare Bali and Thailand on price, experiences, food, transportation, and atmosphere — based on our own experience after years in Bali.

Price Level: Bali vs Thailand

Comparison of price levels for food and accommodation in Bali and Thailand 2026

Thailand is generally a bit cheaper for street food and simple transportation. Bali, however, offers better value for money when it comes to accommodation and experiences — especially for couples and families who want something extra. Thailand wins on the lowest overall budget, but Bali clearly wins on value for money — especially for experiences and villa accommodation.

Accommodation

Private villa with pool in Bali – luxury at surprisingly low prices

This is where Bali truly stands out. Private villas with pools for 800–2,000 NOK per night are standard in Bali — something that is difficult to find at the same price in Thailand. Bali is the clear choice for couples, honeymoons, and those who want luxury without a luxury price tag.

Food and Restaurant Scene

Both countries have fantastic food — but in completely different styles. Thailand is world-famous for street food that is extremely cheap and available everywhere. Bali focuses more on cafes, healthy food, smoothie bowls, and international concepts — but the local Balinese food is also fantastic, especially nasi goreng and babi guling. Thailand wins on cheapest and best local food; Bali wins on greatest variety and Western comfort.

Transportation

Thailand is generally easier to navigate independently with Grab, Bolt, and domestic flights. In Bali, a scooter is the most flexible option, but many Norwegians prefer a private driver for day trips. This offers a completely different travel experience and is affordable compared to Europe. Bali works best with a little planning or local help — but then it's also much better.

Experiences and Activities

Kelingking Beach on Nusa Penida – dramatic cliffs and turquoise sea in Bali

This is where Bali truly shines. The distance between the best experiences is short, and you can combine volcanoes, temples, beaches, and snorkeling on the same trip. Bali offers sunrise on Mount Batur, temples and spiritual culture, yoga, surfing and wellness, snorkeling with manta rays, rafting and waterfalls, and unique day trips with short distances between attractions.

Thailand primarily offers island hopping and beach life, nightlife and markets, and city life in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Bali offers more varied experiences in a shorter amount of time — and without long and expensive domestic flights.
