Price level: Bali vs Thailand

Thailand is generally slightly cheaper for street food and simple transport. Bali, on the other hand, gives better value for money when it comes to accommodation and experiences – especially for couples and families who want something extra. Thailand wins on the lowest overall budget, but Bali clearly wins on value for money – particularly for experiences and villa stays.

Accommodation

This is where Bali really stands out. Private villas with a pool at $80–200 a night are standard in Bali – something that’s hard to find at the same price in Thailand. Bali is the clear choice for couples, honeymooners and anyone who wants luxury without the luxury price tag.

Food and restaurants

Both countries have fantastic food – but in very different styles. Thailand is world-famous for street food that’s extremely cheap and available everywhere. Bali focuses more on cafés, healthy food, smoothie bowls and international concepts – but the local Balinese food is fantastic too, especially nasi goreng and babi guling. Thailand wins on the cheapest and best local food; Bali wins on the greatest variety and Western comfort.

Transport

Thailand is generally easier to navigate on your own with Grab, Bolt and domestic flights. In Bali a scooter is the most flexible option, but many travellers prefer a private driver for day trips. It gives you a completely different travel experience and is affordable compared with Europe. Bali works best with a little planning or local help – but then it’s much better.

Experiences and activities

This is where Bali really shines. The distances between the best experiences are short, and you can combine a volcano, a temple, a beach and snorkelling on the same trip. Bali offers a sunrise on Mount Batur, temples and spiritual culture, yoga, surfing and wellness, snorkelling with manta rays, rafting and waterfalls, and unique day trips with short distances between the attractions.

Thailand mainly offers island hopping and beach life, nightlife and markets, and city life in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Bali gives you more varied experiences in less time – and without long, expensive domestic flights.
