Where to Stay in Bali: A Guide to the Best Areas

Not sure where to stay in Bali? In this guide, we'll walk you through the most popular areas – from Ubud and Canggu to Seminyak, Uluwatu and Nusa Dua – to help you find the best place for beach life, culture, activities or a family holiday.

Bali is an island of huge variety, from lively beach towns and surf spots to quiet rice fields and traditional villages. Where you should stay depends entirely on the kind of trip you want. In this guide we go through the most popular areas, so you can easily choose the one that suits you best. Not sure what kind of trip you want? Take our trip quiz and we’ll suggest a trip and areas based on your answers.

Seminyak – style, beaches and restaurants

Beach club at sunset in Seminyak – one of Bali’s most popular areas

Best for couples, groups of friends and first-time visitors. Seminyak is known for trendy beach clubs, great restaurants and beautiful beaches. You get a comfortable, social Bali experience with shopping, spas and sunsets close by. It’s more sophisticated than Kuta but still at the heart of tourist life in South Bali, with beach clubs like Potato Head and Ku De Ta and a wide choice of hotels and villas.

Canggu – surf, coffee culture and a laid-back vibe

The Lawn beach club in Canggu – a modern, social area of Bali

Best for digital nomads, surfers and young adults. Canggu has become one of Bali’s most popular areas, with surf beaches, hip cafés and yoga studios – perfect for an active, modern holiday. Surfing at Batu Bolong and Echo Beach is a must for wave lovers, and the social, international atmosphere with plenty of cafés and coworking spaces makes Canggu a natural choice for longer stays.

We offer a surf retreat with experienced local instructors – perfect for beginners and intermediates. It combines surfing, accommodation and Bali experiences.

Ubud – culture, nature and calm

Tegallalang rice terraces in Ubud – green terraces in the jungle landscape of Bali

Best for culture lovers, couples and wellness trips. Ubud lies in the middle of the island and is Bali’s cultural heart, surrounded by rice fields, jungle and temples. It offers yoga, spas and authentic experiences. A guided day trip in Ubud is a wonderful way to see rice terraces, waterfalls and local crafts, and for those looking for calm and depth, Ubud is the natural centre for retreats and wellness.

Uluwatu – cliffs, beaches and spectacular views

Dramatic cliffs and sunset in Uluwatu – luxury and romance in Bali

Best for surfers, couples and luxury travellers. Uluwatu is in the far south of Bali and is known for dramatic cliffs, white beaches and exclusive resorts. A quieter area with stunning nature and some of Bali’s most beautiful sunsets. Uluwatu Temple at sunset is an experience you’ll never forget, and world-class surfing combined with an exclusive atmosphere makes this the natural choice for a luxury holiday or a honeymoon.

We tailor the whole stay – from a villa with a private pool to dinner at sunset on the cliffs.

Nusa Dua – family-friendly and comfortable

Resort in Nusa Dua, Bali – family-friendly beach and pool

Best for families and first-time visitors. Nusa Dua offers large resorts, calm beaches and a high standard. The area is tidy, safe and well suited to families with children, with child-friendly beaches, pools and all-inclusive hotels. It’s close to Ngurah Rai airport, which makes it a practical choice if you arrive late or leave early.

Lovina – quiet Bali in the north

Dolphin watching at sunrise in Lovina – dolphins off the black sand beaches of North Bali

Best for the adventurous and anyone who wants to get away from the crowds. Lovina is known for black sand beaches, dolphin trips and a slower pace – a good choice if you want to see a more local and authentic side of Bali. The early-morning dolphin trip is the highlight for most people; stay in Lovina the night before and see it at sunrise. The trip pairs well with Mount Batur and the Aling-Aling waterfalls along the way.

Combine several areas

Many people combine several areas on one trip to get the best of Bali. Two popular combinations are Ubud plus the beach – culture and nature followed by relaxing in Seminyak, Canggu or Uluwatu – and South Bali plus the north, where you start in Canggu or Uluwatu and finish with a quiet night in Lovina. In our itinerary planner you can try different combinations and see the order, nights in each place and drive times.

At ReadySetIsland we help you put together the right combination based on your wishes, trip length and budget. Have a look at Bali & Island Hopping or our 14-day round trip for inspiration.
