Sightseeing with a private boat — mandatory
The first thing you do in Labuan Bajo is book a full-day trip with a private boat. This is not optional — it is the very essence of the Komodo experience. Always choose a private boat over the public boat. It goes faster, has a limited number of guests (8–10 people), and gives you a completely different experience than pushing through crowds.
A good day trip includes these stops:
Padar Island is the first stop and offers one of the most iconic views in Indonesia — a spectacular trek up to the viewpoint with panoramic views of three bays in different colors. Go early for the best light and to avoid the heat.
Komodo National Park is where you see Komodo dragons in their natural habitat. These reptiles can grow over 3 meters long and weigh over 70 kg — and they are active predators. Always go with a guide and keep your distance. It's a primitive and fascinating experience.
Pink Beach is one of the world's rare beaches with pink sand — the color comes from coral fragments mixed in the sand. Fantastic for snorkeling right off the beach with a rich coral garden and colorful fish.
Taka Makassar is a small white sandbar in the middle of the sea. Here there are no buildings, no facilities — just turquoise water and perfect photo opportunities. Wade out and have the view to yourself.
Manta Point — if you're lucky, manta rays will swim right beneath you. Mantas are peaceful and curious. Book a private boat to ensure you actually get time in the water here.
Turtle Point is the last snorkeling stop with small and large sea turtles in the coral garden. A nice way to end the day in the water.
Le Pirate Island — a private island
Le Pirate Island is one of the most unique experiences in the Flores region. A private island with simple beach huts, lovely views, and an atmosphere that is difficult to describe. At least one day trip here is recommended — if you have 2 nights to spare, stay there.
Be aware: there is no AC in the huts — it gets hot. But the view in the morning and evening makes it worthwhile. The bar has good drinks with happy hour from 4–7 PM. The full package includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner — or buy à la carte. In the evening, outdoor cinema and bonfires are arranged on specific days.
It is possible to snorkel with baby sharks directly from the beach or dive with the crew stationed on the island.
The public boat to Le Pirate departs twice daily from Labuan Bajo — departure at 10:00 AM, return at 2:00 PM. The trip takes about 1 hour each way and the boat is free. If you take an early flight to Labuan Bajo, you'll easily catch the 10:00 AM departure.

Rangko Cave
Rangko Cave is a cave that can be visited in half a day. You drive to the harbor and take a small boat to the entrance. Inside the cave, there is a natural pool with turquoise water — and at the right time, sunlight streams through the opening, creating a magical light. Bring a local guide who knows the timings.

La Cucina is the best choice for Italian food — good pasta and a relaxed atmosphere.

Katamaran Hotel & Resort Komodo is the best 5-star option in the area — great location and full service for those who want luxury.
Bayview Gardens Hotel is a good mid-range option with one of the best views in Labuan Bajo. Worth staying here just for the morning view.
La Boheme Bajo Hostel is for those on a budget — a good hostel with a social atmosphere and central location.
Liveaboard — a completely different Komodo
If you want to experience Komodo at its best, consider a liveaboard. A large boat with everything included — accommodation, food, diving, and snorkeling — that takes you to all the mandatory spots in the Flores and Komodo region. You choose the number of days and nights yourself.

How to get to Komodo
Fly from Bali (recommended) — take a flight from Ngurah Rai (DPS) to Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Flight time is just over 1 hour. There are direct flights with several airlines. Short distance from the airport to the harbor and good options for Gojek and Grab directly from the airport.
Liveaboard from Bali — if you have plenty of time, you can take a liveaboard all the way from Bali to Komodo. A unique experience for those who want the ultimate boat trip.
If you are mostly staying in Labuan Bajo, we recommend a private driver per day — Gojek and Grab work well from the airport but are more limited within the city.
Vegard's best tips
Always book a private boat — never public. Bring sunscreen, a water bottle, and seasickness tablets for your boat day. Go to Padar early in the morning for the best light and fewest people. Always keep your distance from Komodo dragons and follow your guide — they are faster than they look. Take an early flight to Labuan Bajo if you are going to Le Pirate Island. And set aside at least one evening for Bayview Gardens just for the view.
